National Stress Awareness Day, November 6th

As we approach National Stress Awareness Day on November 6th, we want to take a moment to recognize the importance of managing stress - both for ourselves and our children. This day serves as a reminder to focus on mental well-being and to adopt practices that can help alleviate stress in our daily lives.

TIPS FOR PARENTS TO DESTRESS

  • Practice Mindfulness: Take a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness or meditation. Deep breathing exercises can help clear your mind and reduce anxiety. There are lots of phone apps, YouTube videos, etc. that can help parents build a mindfulness practice, even if it’s just a few minutes each day.

  • Stay Active: Engage in physical activities you enjoy, such as walking, yoga, or dancing. Exercise is a proven stress reliever and can improve your mood.

  • Connect with Others: Reach out to friends or family members for support. Sharing your feelings and experiences with trusted people can provide comfort and strengthen your relationships. Seek support from a therapist to facilitate deeper conversations and practice strategies.

  • Set Boundaries: Learn to say no when necessary. It’s important to prioritize your mental health and avoid overcommitting.

  • Take Breaks: Allow yourself short breaks throughout the day to recharge. Step outside, read a book, or enjoy a quiet moment to reset.

TIPS FOR SUPPORTING KIDS TO DESTRESS

  • Open Communication: Create an environment where your children feel comfortable sharing their feelings. Ask open-ended questions about their day and listen actively.

  • Encourage Health Routines: Promote a balanced routine that includes time for homework, play, and relaxation. Consistency can provide a sense of security.

  • Engage in Activities Together: Spend quality time engaging in fun activities such as cooking, crafting, or playing games. These shared experiences can strengthen your bond and help relieve stress.

  • Teach Coping Strategies: Introduce your children to simple coping techniques, such as deep breathing or visualization, to help them manage their emotions when they feel overwhelmed.

  • Model Self-Care: Show your kids the importance of self-care by prioritizing your own mental health. When they see you managing stress effectively, they’re more likely to adopt similar habits.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

To further support our community, we encourage parents and caregivers to participate in local workshops focused on stress management techniques. Check out our website for events the Laconia Youth Alliance and/or our community partners are putting on.

Let’s work together to create a healthier, more supportive environment for ourselves and our children. By prioritizing stress awareness, we can promote well-being for our families and our community.
